Meet our Staff

Aline Holzwarth

Aline has been with the Center for Advanced Hindsight since 2009 in a variety of hands-on, project management capacities. Aline has collaborated with and served as the point of contact for many cross-functional teams, often overseeing relationships with multimedia partners or working with development teams to bring a wide range of CAH projects to life.

Aline developed the online course, A Beginner’s Guide to Irrational Behavior, which is consistently ranked in the top 5 MOOCs and has been completed by over 300,000 students worldwide over the course of two years (2013-2014). She curated the content, built the online infrastructure, managed the course’s video streaming and special projects, and conducted research through the course.

Aline has managed countless projects at CAH, from published research studies to the lab’s app suite, where she has conceptualized, designed, and overseen the development of 6 apps; most notably, the app (Sample) Size Matters, which collects data from “Smartphone Scientist” users. Over 4 years, her management of an undergraduate computer science team, and later a professional app development company, has resulted in iterations that have improved the app’s usability, thousands of downloads of the app, and an internationally diverse participant pool. She is currently collaborating with Qualtrics, the industry-leading provider of online survey software used across all industries, to develop the first app integration of their software.

Apart from acting as the Director of the Startup Lab, Aline also leads the CAH team of a $775,000 grant from Google, a project that is testing 6 mobile app prototypes that use behavioral economics to design interventions that improve medical and exercise adherence. Moving into 2017, Aline is also managing a grant from Novartis to explore behavioral interventions for heart failure patients, and continuing her close collaboration with Pattern Health Technologies by leading a pilot study as the local startup launches a medical adherence app. In addition, Aline heads up fundraising efforts for the research lab and Startup Lab—writing successful grants in the past and working to ensure the sustainability of the CAH.

Aline holds a BA in Psychology from Reed College and an MBA from Duke’s Fuqua School of Business.
