THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME
Want to know why the Ulysses Lab is called the Ulysses Lab?
And thus the Ulysses contract was born
The inspiration behind our namesake comes from the story of Ulysses and the sirens. As you may recall from Homer’s ancient tale, Ulysses knew that if he allowed himself to respond to the tempting calls of the Sirens, he would follow them (thereby leading himself and his crew to a sure death). To avoid this dreadful fate, he had his sailors tie him to the mast of his ship and put wax in their ears so that they could not hear the sirens. He ordered them to pull out their swords and attack him if he tried to remove himself from the mast. Ulysses protected himself from temptation by making it impossible to take action when temptation appeared. He didn’t have to summon his willpower to resist because giving in was not an option.
That’s why we’ve created the Ulysses Lab -- to help people form unbreakable commitments to their most important goals, leaving them with no option other than to succeed. All of the programs created by the Ulysses Lab have the same underlying structure: Your current self-commits to constraining your future self so that you can reach your goals in the best interest of all your selves.
